Welcome to the Viking Bay Classic

An Ocean Tech race off the stunning Viking Bay Beach, Broadstairs.

GBSUP 6km National Series Race & 3km Challenge Tour

Kent SUP Racing was set up with an ambition to bring national level racing to the county, inspiring locals and visitors alike to paddle some of our counties best waterways, taking in the history and culture of Kent.


The Viking Bay Classic does just that through a GBSUP National Series Sanctioned Event, which ran in partnership with Kent Surf School. 

What is the event all about?

GBSUP run a national series of Stand Up Paddle events with two disciplines: Flatwater and Ocean Technical. For 2021, Kent SUP Racing has been asked to host the final event for their Ocean Tech series. Working in partnership with Kent Surf School based at the stunning Viking Bay right in the heart of Broadstairs, the Viking Bay Classic brings national level racing to the Isle of Thanet and Kent. The event will feature the primary series race, Challenge Tour, end of season prize-giving, and afternoon activities, so it is sure to be action-packed for the whole day.

When does the race start?

The race will start at 10 am from the beach at Viking Bay, right in front of Kent Surf School. Participants will race a set course coming in and out of the bay over multiple laps, producing exciting racing. Spectators will have a stunning view from the beach, surrounding cliff tops and the harbourside jetty.

What are the timings for the day?

Registration Opens 8am
Race Briefing 9am
Race Start 10am
Prize Giving 1pm
Afternoon Events Start 2pm

Who can take part?

The event is open to paddlers of all abilities. As part of your entry, you will be selecting your relevant categories for board style, length and age category.

What Races are there?

There are two races you can enter. The first being the GBSUP series race which is roughly planned for a 6km total distance. The Challenge Tour is aimed at novices to racing to give them a taste of SUP Racing over a 3km course.

How do I enter?

Entry is through Webscorer, where you will complete your entry form and select if you would like an event t-shirt. To enter, follow the link at the bottom of the page here

What categories are there?

There are multiple categories for the national series 6km race based on your board length and age group. You can select the relevant categories during entry, and a complete list can be found here within the GBSUP series rules.

The 3km Challenge Tour is unrestricted so that you can enter on any board.

Additional Details


The event will be based right in the heart of Broadstairs in Kent, with a stunning backdrop, beach and visibility for passers-by. Competitors will be starting from the bay next to teh harbour before heading out to sea to complete the technical course. Broadstairs has an array of shops, restaurants and beaches, so there is plenty to do for the whole family. Nearby to the event, car parks and roadside parking are all within walking distance of the bay and the day's action.
